War-Toys Vol.1
War-Toys Vol.1

The first volume of War-Toys chronicles McCarty's collaborations over the course of two years with children in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza Strip. Drawings that the boys and girls created are shown alongside the photographs they inspired, sometimes taken while fighting raged closeby. The resulting series provides powerful context for the children’s accounts while documenting the playthings available in each area. These cheap, plastic arsenals mirror what the children see everyday – in the news and on the streets.

Art-Toys

Art Toys is a massive collection of Brian McCarty's meticulously composed photographs that uniquely chronicle the Art-Toy movement. For six years, McCarty worked alongside a host of international artists, photographing their toy characters in actual locations ranging from the Grand Canyon to Times Square. The resulting photos are sometimes dark, often funny, and always hinting at a deeper story. The moments that McCarty manufactures in front of the camera feel real, as if he’s simply documenting the day-to-day lives of toys.

Beyond Ultraman Exhibition Catalog
Beyond Ultraman Exhibition Catalog

Beyond Ultraman examines the vinyl art toy landscape through the work of Gary Baseman, Tim Biskuip, David Gonzales, David Horvath, Sun-Min Kim, Brian McCarty and Mark Nagata. Each artist has elevated the vinyl art toy movement and captured the attention of two audiences: the mainstream art and toy communities.

The 2007 exhibition at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, curated by Maria Kwong, was the first to examine toys as a purposeful means of artistic expression. The exhibition catalog stands alone as an art book that chronicles the work of artists pushing the boundaries of the toy medium.
